a cold of great magnitude
the viral kind
struck
a rendezvous
in anyone’s garden
was cancelled
so for the record
it was important
to me
to visit
anyone’s garden
just to look
and record
january’s scene
the here and now
that greeted me
gutted me
anyone’s garden had been gardened
hard
and laid bare
across the site
the effects:
a starker environment
reduced nesting places
bioremediation
greater visibility
a change in aesthetic
in hindsight
it shouldn’t have come as a surprise
but i wasn’t thinking backwards
i was looking forward
looking forward to being in anyone’s garden
but looking back
eleven months ago
anyone’s garden
looked similar…

the green regained
as it will again
treading over branches strewn
and plastic bottles
(for in the cut back no rubbish was cleared up)
I went to the patch where the bee orchids bloomed last june
put a smile on my face
